Watermarks and what they're good for

Journal Entry: Fri May 2, 2014, 10:55 AM
Everyone by now has heard of hot topic right?

That hippie dippy store that caters to today's fads.

Well it's not so happy when they're making a profit off our fan art or original works.

This is not the first time Hot Topic has been under fire for their art theft. They've stolen designs from several artists before.

This work was originally designed by rismo who even acknowledged that they never sold their rights to the fan image.

This is why I watermark my fan works. To keep companies like Hot Topic from stealing my designs and fan works. Watermarks stops companies from taking our designs and making a profit off it. Watermarks may be ugly, but they're useful in keeping us out of the courts with law suits on these types of companies.

In a way, watermarks are a safety net. So shut up about how watermarks are ugly. They keep us hard working artists out of financial trouble.

Update:

deviantART cannot sell our works to companies like welikefine or Hot Topic without our written consent. This was a case where the designers who work under Hot Topic's pay roll got lazy and decided to slap a fan work on a shirt.

So does Welovefine actually steal people's art too?
It's a right shame. I actually like shopping at Hot Topic, and it's hard to even find one around here (I often have to order stuff online).
Not so sure I want to patronize them now.

Unless it's one of the artists that they accepted, no, they as a whole do not steal works. It all falls onto a single lazy person when art is stolen.

I stopped giving them my business long ago when I discovered they stole several things from people.

and just another reason Hottopic is becoming one of my most hated stores T.T and I use to get all of my clothes there too before justin bieber T.T welp they have officially lost another customer...THOUGH i would like to point out that while hottopic does sell this they are not the creating company of the shirt and thus did not steal the art. They sold it yes but technically they are not the thevies just an unfortunate third party to the theft.

Just like target and walmart and such they are just used to sell merchandise that they have bought off of another company.so sadly hottopic could not have known that they had copy written product in their store as they did buy the product from someone else to be able to put in their stores. Hopefully they will do the correct thing and remove the product from their stores (or at least reimburse the artist with little hassle.) but you should have looked to see who the creator of the shirt was as that is the person that has stolen the art.

I agree. I use to get all my anime shirts there when I went through my weaboo phase. Then I was alerted through a journal about Hot Topic's art theft and that was the end of that joy ride.

Luckily Walmart and Target stores understand and will remove merchandise if it's questionable and brought up. I don't think Hot Topic posts who their 'designers' are. And I do know that they order shirts from welikefine because it seems to me in my area they're teetering on the Brony level rather than the rock band geek. Nothing against Rock Band geeks as I'm one myself. But seeing Pony shit piled up to the rafters is a bit much.

when they started selling bleach blue jeans I was like "Nope, I'm out."

Most stores wont post anything about their designers as they come from a different company which has those designers work for them. YOu can get the company that made the shirt from the tag. That is the only way you will be able to find anything out about the designers is by contacting the creating company. but yea I just want them to go back to the goth they where before T.T I like that stuff....I can't find my clothes anywhere now I have to order them all. T.T

Man that sucks :c

I hate that when you find something you like, they take it away from you. It's not fair. I found the magical healing properties of Vick's greaseless cream and now it's gone. I can't even order it online BI

That's why I never quit looking. And the reason you've never heard of it is because Vick's  never advertised it. And yet there are hundreds of folks who are demanding they restock it. I only pray that they do.
